After closing our physical location doors, we decided to do two festivals per year. After living in Galveston for 6 months we returned to enjoy its pefect weather and cool breezes. ARToberFEST an artists tradition in the island takes place close to the strand. This juried show that we were part of the year before reminded us of our physical studio especially the part about having people over to check out our new creations.

We are sad to tell our supporters and fans that we are closing or physical location at MECA/Dow School Campus. Do to circumstances beyond our control or gallery located in the back of 1900 Kane Street, Houston, TX 77007, 700 Silver will be now a online gallery and a festival tent until further notice. I brakes our heart that the physical space has to given back to its owners the non-profit educational organization of MECA but we are returning it with the renovations we made including track-lighting and painted walls. Please stay tuned on developments in our inventory and events in the community.

We will like to thank the artists who helped us make the gallery happen for the 6 months it had its doors open!

Calavera Rendezvous 2010

Jodie and David participated in the 1^nd annual Calavera Rendezvous which kicks off MECA’s annual Día de los Muertos Festival. The soiree features music, a Calavera Fashion Show and a silent auction of calavera sculptures. Below are our submittions, enjoy!

Day of the Dead: Contemporary Visions

Our latest project is celebrating "dia de los muertos" with style. We have six artists confirmed and more coming as we tackle this tradition in a contemporary way. Below is an example of the artists creations inspired by our mortality.

The artshow will be on view Friday October 29-November 12. Artist opening is this Friday the 29th from 7-9pm and we will have the studio open during MECA's Day of the Dead Festival Saturday and Sunday 10am-4pm.

festival season is here in texas...it's finally perfect weather to sit outside and enjoy the cool breezes. we spent last weekend in galveston at ARToberFEST, along post office street downtown. it was our first experience at a juried show and we loved it! you can see our booth above, it definitely has the feel of our studio in houston...with the hand-painted sign we framed with one of our antique store finds.

we're looking forward to a few more local festivals in the coming months...come see us at vintage park in north houston or in the heights! see events page for more information. we're also working to update our etsy shop once we get our inventory in order from the festival...hopefully soon!

we are excited to welcome some incredibly talented women to mariposa studio this month! on friday august 27, we will hold the women of texas art show, with artists from across the state. we hope you'll join us to support local talent and spend some time getting to know these women. there is free admission for the event and a chance to take home a piece of your own.

at mariposa studio, we believe adults need more opportunities to play. in our new mixed media workshop you will have the chance to do just that…and we clean up the mess! if you're curious about mixed media art and intrigued by the opportunity to combine your personal items in a unique art piece, Make A Mess is for you! we will supply a variety of media for use during the workshop, including (but not limited to): papers, photographs, vintage ephemera, acrylic paints, watercolors, beeswax. and to personalize the experience, we encourage participants to bring their own photos, images from magazines/newspapers, mementos to include in their artwork.

vinyasa yoga series

as we explore new ways to connect with our community, we have invited yoga instructor lindsay parmer to lead us in a weekly yoga class at the studio during the month of august. if you're looking for a unique experience, please join us this thursday, july 29 for our first morning session of power vinyasa yoga. vinyasa is the linking between movement, poses and breath...you can learn more about the practice here.

chagall & chardonnay

we had a great turnout for our first chagall and chardonnay event last night. our artists were introduced to the work of marc chagall and enjoyed a short lesson on the history of his art career. while sipping wine and interacting with instructor david gonzalez, they were encouraged to create sketches of various images to incorporate in their painting.

once the sketches were complete it was time to begin selecting colors...and getting messy. several samples of chagall's paintings were available to inspire the students to be bold in their color choices.

we can hardly wait until the next event in august...and hope to have a full house again for the evening. if you couldn't make it last night and want to ensure a space on august 20, you can sign-up online here.

painting in the window at lululemon in houston on saturday

jodie had the opportunity to paint BIG at the lululemon storefront in highland village over the weekend. a yoga-inspired image seemed perfect for the athletic apparel shop, which hosts film events and free yoga classes to encourage community health.

jodie's sister works in the houston store and partners with various groups to create an interactive experience for weekend shoppers. mariposa studio was grateful for the chance to get out of the studio and do something fun in the community! we gave away original artwork by jodie as well as gift certificates to upcoming events and workshops at mariposa studio. thanks for your support, casey!

the art piece measures almost 5 feet by 5 feet and will be featured for a short period at the store...stop by and take a peek!

join us in the studio for our summer events!

mariposa studio will begin hosting wine and painting events, entitled Chagall and Chardonnay, this month. have you grown bored with your routine and ready to get more creative? sick of the dinner-and-a-movie date nights? or need a girls night out? Chagall and Chardonnay is the perfect solution for a midsummer's night.

our first event will be held on friday, july 23 from 7:00-9:00pm. the evening will include a brief history on the work of marc chagall and instruction on creating your own unique style. we provide all necessary materials (including the wine!) and you go home with your own piece of art. for additional details, please see the events page.

david is also preparing for his solo show, Mystical Visions, which will be available for viewing on saturday, july 24. the show is a culmination of a decade's worth of work, focused on his spiritual journey. we will have an open studio on saturday in conjunction with neighboring Iyollo Gallery.

mixed media on repurposed tabletop

this weekend's show is all about found or repurposed objects. david and i are collectors...one step inside our apartment and you will know this is true. our recent obsession has been vintage/antique shops, thrift stores, and garage sales for items to use in our artwork. tomorrow night, we will showcase some of our finds, proving that one (wo)man's trash is another's treasure.

please join us either friday night 7-10pm or saturday 11am-5pm to see the above piece in its entirety. and if you're not in the houston area and still interested in seeing the show, check back next week for posts of the artwork on display.

we are also exploring the idea of holding workshops in the studio for those who want to stop LOOKING at art and actually get their hands dirty. you can visit our facebook page (see right) and join the "discussion" to cast your vote for workshop topics!

mariposa studio opened its doors to the public saturday night for a preview to next month's grand opening. artists, neighborhood residents, and members of the art community were in attendance for the iyollo gallery closing of the march exhibition featuring daniel anguilu. our studio featured works by various artists, and an intimate lounge atmosphere to welcome our visitors.

we featured a number of david's sculptures as well as his mixed media art pieces. jodie also had work amidst the overflow from iyollo gallery next door. her mixed media on album covers included the signature butterfly piece that mimicked the couple's representations on the old school chalk boards.

in addition, a preview of the couple's photography from their recent greek travels were displayed electronically.

mariposa studio is planning its official opening show for saturday may 15, with selected works by david and jodie gonzalez. you can keep up with the studio renovation here...as we work over the next month to transform this 1950's classroom into a modern studio/gallery space.

as we exit the cocoon...

a few weeks ago, we signed a lease on an old classroom and mariposa studio was born. hopefully with a little love and some serious demo, it will soon look similar to the above photo. this was the opening of iyollo gallery...which belongs to artist george manzur, and occupies the space next door. the hope is that we can get a few more artists into the remaining wing of the old school building, which houses the multicultural center, MECA.
